The only problem with all this?

It is expensive!

And just how is working for you?

Yep. Same here.

So let's say we are a little more Internet savvy than the average joe and we pay Google or some other Internet search engine for 'targeted' ads to get traffic to our website.

 (We forgot 'website' in the list above hmmm?)

And how is that working?

Yea I thought so. Me too. Lost my butt on that one.

STOP: You Need To Think About Something For A Minute.

People are sick of being marketed to.

They want to find it themselves.

Like when you go in the store and tell the nice girl asking if you need help - "Thanks I'm just looking" even though you know exactly what you want.

When I want to find something locally - like a place to fix a vacuum cleaner - you know what I do?

I open Google and type in - vacuum cleaner Dallas Ga. I look at the top five NON-PAID listings and usually find exactly what I want.

I click on the link that I am attracted to -  make sure it is what I need - and pick up the phone and call the number they give me.

I'll bet you do too.

Let's see - if both you and I look at Google (or MSN or Yahoo or whatever) when we want to find a local business - then how many of your prospective clients do that as well?

Lot's of them. In fact, I'd bet the farm on it. (That's a joke - get it? -'farm' as in horse farm?)

So how does a small business owner/entrepreneur like you and me get our name and website in the top of the search engines?

Well we can pay the 'experts' thousands of dollars to build us a "website" and then thousands more to try and get  paid listings in the one, two or three position.

(Do you look at the sponsored links? Me either!)

Or we can do it my way.

Learn it yourself.

I found out the hard way.

For years I have been paying (well let's not go there as my wife will probably read this sooner or later) a lot of money to the gurus to learn how to make a living selling on the Internet.

I have a hard drive full of ebooks at $37, $47 and even $99 each! I have bookmarks to all the best blogs, and the websites that teach you how to sell online. I have taken 6 month long mentoring programs and have masterminded with people all over the world (and still do).

I know from personal experience how hard it is to make your mark on the Internet. Also known is the incredible time it takes to learn something new and  different. (Especially if what you are learning is in a completely different field than yours.)

 
But isn't that always the best way to do it? (well no actually I don't believe that one either!)

This is how I did it...


1. Build a web log. Also known as a 'blog'. I suggest www.blogspot.com.

Cost for the blog?  Free.

2. Build a 'social bookmarking page'. You might have heard about Web 2.0. It's no big deal. It simply means using the power of all the morons (oops sorry that one slipped) who spend all day surfing on the Internet to increase YOUR visibility.  I suggest www.squidoo.com or hubpages.com.

Cost? Free.

3. Write and submit articles to 'article directories'. This step will get your name out there - show you know what you are doing. Plus it adds links out on the Internet to your website - and helps people find you.  Just search for 'article directories' on the net.

Cost? Free.
(You have to write the article - well not always...)

These three steps alone will do wonders for your rankings - but there is a lot more I am going to share with you.

How many pages come up with my name? A few hmmm? Like 8,660 in this search.

So how am I going to sell it? Same way. By having my page come up when a prospect types in the correct search term. 

When I type in 'horse farm for sale atlanta' this is what shows up. I'm #2 and #3. (By the time you get there I hope I have sold my farm and the links will be gone!
